Dhankuta Municipality is well known as Dhankuta Gauda (Administrative Centre).  Dhankuta Municipality is not only the headquarters of Dhankuta district but also is the Regional Centre of the Eastern Development Region of Nepal. The district is located in the Koshi Zone of Eastern Nepal. It is easily accessible by road from Dharan in the south and lies on the way to Arun valley, Makalu and Kanchanjunga mountain.

Being located in the Middle Mountains region, the climate of Dhankuta Municipality is essentially warm temperate, sub tropical. The temperatures are mild both in summer and in winter. Many sites of religious and cultural importance as well as scenic and recreational spots exist within and around Dhankuta Municipality which make it an excellent touristy potential.
